Bunky's BBQ in Spearfish

If you are in the Spearfish area and are jonesing for some awesome BBQ then look no further than Bunky's BBQ. At Bunky's you will find a selection of mouthwatering BBQ ribs, pork, smoked hot dogs, and so much more. There are a few permanent menu items and then everyday featured items, which rotates depending on the day of the week.

My husband and I tried the Jalepeno Smoked Hot Dog and the Pulled Pork. Now having lived near Kansas for over three years before moving to the Black Hills, I know good BBQ and Bunky's blew them all out of the water! The three sauces that we used on our meat was their Regular BBQ Sauce, a Hot BBQ Sauce, and then their version on the Carolina Gold Sauce. All three received an A in my book. You will be treated to huge portions of meat that is tender and juicy, delicious home-made beans, and some of the best coleslaw I've ever had.

After talking to the kitchen manager, we learned that the Ribs are the best seller on the days that they are offered (which are Thursday & Sunday in case you were wondering). If you are wanting to get some ribs make sure you get there early as they often run out, which was the case when we got there around 6pm on a Thursday evening. Don't worry if you can't get there right when they open as two batches are made each day the ribs are served and are ready at different times.

While enjoying your meat with one of their three homemade sauces, you will be able to enjoy a fresh brew from Crow Peak Brewery, which shares its parking lot with Bunky's. Look for a post about Crow Peak coming soon as there is tons to say about the great beer that Crow Peak creates.

When you go into Bunky's you are going to find great quality food and the friendly service that South Dakota is known for!

Prairie Berrie Winery

One of the hidden gems in the Black Hills is the Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City. My husband and I decided to go check it out as I love wine and the experience of wineries. Well this one out paces any other winery I have been to and trust me I have been to quite a few!

As soon as you walk in the doors, someone is there to greet you and make sure you know how the tastings work at Prairie Berry. One of the most unique aspects of tasting wine at Prairie Berry is that the tasting is pretty much unlimited. Now I’m not saying you can go in all day and just sit there and drink wine without paying. What I am saying is the the staff wants to make sure that you get to experience every vintage they have available so you can love their wine as much as they do! By the end of our trip I must have tried at least 10 different wines, including a mulled wine, which was a first for me!

Another interesting thing about Prairie Berry is their revolutionary system of tap wine! I have never seen this before and the winery is working on expanding from three taps to many more. The uniqueness of the wine is amazing as it is much fresher and sharper than normally bottled wine. The concept is that of a brewery who serves fresh brewed beer out of a tap system.

Speaking of beer, the owners of Prairie Berry also own the brewery right next door! So ladies (gentlemen) who are traveling with someone who is not a wine connoisseur, just send them over to the brewery for some excellent beer! The owners of these two establishments really have come up with an ingenious idea to make their business a must stop at place when traveling in the Black Hills as it appeals to almost all adults who like to drink beer and wine!

Satisfied at Saloon #10

Saloon #10 is a must stop at location in Deadwood! From the sarcasticly witty dealers to the vast selection of whiskey on hand, you will be impressed with this bar and casino. One thing that is not first apparent when walking into Saloon #10 is the staff and owners' commitment to give back to their local community.

Ever year Saloon #10 raises thousands and thousands of dollars to support cancer research and any other charity that captures the heart of the staff. Just to name a few of the landmark saloon's events is Sex Toy Bingo, St. Panty's Day Fashion Show, and their annual Lingerie Show in November. In the past year, the #10 has raised over $50,000 for cancer research.

As impressive as their charity work is, the staff's ability to have fun with their customers is even greater. No where else in Deadwood can you find single deck Blackjack. The casino staff also has weekly poker games available as well as $2 3 Card Poker!

The only downside to Saloon #10 that I have found after being a patron for years is that when gambling the only complimentary drinks are Busch Light & White Zinfandel. As Saloon #10 is considered to be one of the best whiskey bars in the area, a reasonable person would expect that whiskey would be available to its gamers. This may be something for management to consider changing in the future......

Stayed tuned for our next review of Saloon #10's food as well as the food from the Social Club, which is the restaurant located right above Saloon #10.
